Let’s talk about Night Lovell’s new project, MY BLOOD AS THE INK. There is a music video attached to the first track titled “SICK & TIRED.”
On this song, Lovell poses the question, “What better way for Mr. Lovell to write about his journey than use his own blood as ink?” (I’m paraphrasing.) It’s an interesting way of saying that he poured his blood, sweat, & tears into this project.
Lovell talks his shit on the album as if he’s responding to someone directly. Whom, you might ask?
I HAVE NO FUCKIN’ CLUE.
And yet, I can feel the energy. It’s rageful, & I’m here for it.
He talks about how he’s been working so hard that it’s incomparable to other people/artists. He’s sick & tired of people asking him for money, acting like they fuck with him even when they don’t, & not sticking to “the code.” (I can’t say much about that last one other than it’s obviously some street shit I don’t understand.)
He also touches on his past. Not having any goals or aspirations. I can relate to that because there was a time where I just wanted to drift through life without having any real direction.
Lovell’s style is very dark sonically. His flows give me gothic trapper vibes. It’s an interesting combination, but it reminds me of artists like $uicideboy$ & Freddie Dredd (whom he actually mentions cleverly on one of the tracks on this album).
Lovell discusses moving forward with his life. Now that he’s found “his purpose,” he’s never looking back.
I love the calmness in his voice because it’s a bit of a contradiction to what he’s actually saying. His lyrics are aggressive & sometimes twisted in nature, yet the way he delivers them is completely opposite in tone.
Now, there are a few songs that are more chill, like “CIGARETTE,” which is a sad song about how he’s been in pain for so long and that he doesn’t give a fuck anymore about trying. He wants to be the kid he was back when his mom raised him, but he’s been forced into becoming a “devil,” basically.
I really loved the usage of metaphors on this track, like how he feels like a cigarette because people only want him around for a “fix.”
Overall, this project has a great balance of darkness, introspective reflection, & aggressive energy on almost every track.
He says his music is for “people who have been in asylums.” More accurately, psych wards. Which, personally, I’ve been to many times now.
I know what it’s like to be struggling mentally.
What I will say about this album is that it’s got heavy topics, & even though it sounds fun, you may be left feeling bad or upset because of the imagery & metaphors.
My final thoughts… very easy to listen to & enjoy because it’s only 26 minutes long (which is great for my Gen Z brain). I adore this subgenre of Hip-Hop, & I truly believe you could learn some things from listening to this project.
My rating is a 10/10!
Again, I’m VERY impressed by this project & cannot wait to see what Lovell has in the chamber for us next.
